Double-Sided Academic Study of a Male Nude
Unknown Artist (17th century)
Chalk heightened with white.
15 1/2″ x 11″
A double-sided Academic Study of a male nude. This work bears a striking resemblance to the academic studies that were being produced in the art academies of the Carracci and Pietro Faccini at the start of the 17th century. There is also an especially strong correlation to the early “finished” studies from live models made in black chalk by the hand of Giovanni Francesco
Barbieri, called Il Guercino. Compare Guercino’s Nude Youth Seated on the Ground in the Windsor Castle, Royal Library (inv. no. 2415).
